Cestodes: Dipylidium caninum, Taenia spp., Echinococcus multilocularis
Nematodes: Toxocara cati, Ancylostoma tubaeforme
Prevention of heartworm disease (Dirofilaria immitis) if concomitant treatment against cestodes is indicated.

MILBEMAX is a broad spectrum wormer indicated in the dog for the treatment of mixed infections by the adult cestodes and nematodes of the following species:
Cestodes: Dipylidium caninum, Taenia spp., Echinococcus spp., Mesocestoides spp
Nematodes: Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina, Ancylostoma caninum, Trichuris vulpis.
Crenosoma vulpis(reduction of the level of infection),
Angiostrongylus vasorum (reduction of the level of infection; see specific treatment schedule under dosage and administration).
Milbemax can also be used in the prevention of heartworm disease (Dirofilaria immitis), if concomitant treatment against cestodes is indicated. In this case the product should be administered monthly.
Dosage & administration
1. Milbemax tablets for Small Cats and Kittens/Milbemax Tablets for Cats
MILBEMAX* tablets are administered at a minimum recommended dose rate of 2 mg milbemycin oxime and 5 mg praziquantel per kg body weight, given once orally.
MILBEMAX is given by oral administration with or after some food. Doing so ensures optimum protection against heartworm disease.
Depending on the bodyweight of the cat, the practical dosing is as follows: |
Weight | MILBEMAX* tablets for Small cats and kittens | MILBEMAX* tablets for Cats |
0.5 – 1 kg | ½ tablet | |
> 1 – 2 kg | 1 tablet | |
> 2 – 4 kg | | ½ tablet |
> 4 – 8 kg | | 1 tablet |
> 8 – 12 kg | | 1 ½ tablets |
MILBEMAX can be inserted into a programme for prevention of heartworm disease if at the same time treatment against tapeworms is indicated. MILBEMAX has a duration of heartworm prevention of one month. For regular prevention of heartworm disease the use of a monosubstance is preferred.
2. Milbemax tablets for Small Dogs and Puppies/Milbemax Tablets Dogs
MILBEMAX tablets are administered at a minimum recommended dose rate of 0.5 mg milbemycin oxime and 5 mg praziquantel per kg body weight, given once orally.
MILBEMAX is given by oral administration with or after some food.
Depending on the bodyweight of the dog, the practical dosing is as follows: |
Weight | MILBEMAX tablets for small dogs and puppies | MILBEMAX tablets for dogs |
0.5 – 1 kg | ½ tablet | |
> 1 - 5 kg | 1 tablet | |
>5 – 10 kg | 2 tablets | 1 tablet |
>10 – 25 kg | | 1 tablet |
> 25 – 50 kg | | 2 tablets |
> 50 – 75 kg | | 3 tablets |
In cases where heartworm disease prevention is used and at the same time treatment against tapeworm is required, MILBEMAX can replace the monovalent product for the prevention of heartworm disease.
For Angiostrongylus vasorum infection, milbemycin oxime should be given four times at weekly intervals. It is recommended, where concomitant treatment against cestodes is indicated, to treat once with MILBEMAX and continue with the monovalent product containing milbemycin oxime alone, for the remaining three weekly treatments.

Treatment of dogs with a high number of circulating microfilariae can sometimes lead to the appearance of hypersensitivity reactions, such as pale mucous membranes, vomiting, trembling, laboured breathing or excessive salivation. These reactions are associated with the release of proteins from dead or dying microfilariae and are not a direct toxic effect of the product. The use in dogs suffering from microfilaremia is thus not recommended.
In heartworm risk-areas, or in the case it is known that a dog has been travelling to and from heartworm risk regions, before using MILBEMAX, a veterinary consultation is advised to exclude the presence of any concurrent infestation of Dirofilaria immitis. In the case of a positive diagnosis, adulticidal therapy is indicated before administering MILBEMAX.

In dogs less than 4 weeks old, tapeworm infection is unusual. Treatment of animals less than 4 weeks old with a combination product may therefore not be necessary.
Parasite resistance to any particular class of anthelmintic may develop following frequent, repeated use of an anthelmintic of that class.
In case of overdosing, hydriasis, depression, drooling, paresis, trembling and/or staggered gait can occur in some dogs. The symptoms will disappear spontaneously within a day. No antidote is known

Further information

Milbemycin oxime belongs to the group of macrocyclic lactones and is active against mites, against larval and adult stages of nematodes as well as against larvae of Dirofilaria immitis.
The concurrent use of MILBEMAX with selamectin is well tolerated. No interactions were observed when the recommended dose of the macrocyclic lactone selamectin was administered during treatment with MILBEMAX at the recommended dose. In the absence of further studies, caution should be taken in the case of concurrent use of MILBEMAX and other macrocyclic lactones. Also, no such studies have been performed with reproducing animals.
Praziquantel is an acylated pyrazino-isoquinoline derivative active against cestodes and trematodes.
MILBEMAX is effective against Dirofilaria imitis, which is endemic in the USA and some parts of continental Europe. The product is also effective against Echinococcus multilocularis which is endemic in some parts of continental Europe and prophylactic treatment is required in all pets entering the UK under the PETS scheme or under quarantine conditions.
